There is growing interest in trying to reduce our ‘carbon footprint’.
A carbon footprint is the measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced – which are measured in units of carbon dioxide (co2).
We have formed an association with a carbon offset company, co2balance.
(www.co2balance.com) and invite our guests to offset the carbon emissions associated with their travel to the Isles of Scilly by paying a £5 voluntary contribution towards the planting of a tree.
co2balance have established that the average carbon footprint for guests to Tregarthen’s, travelling by either air or sea after a mainland journey, is 425 kg co2 per person.
To offset that, we invite guests to contribute £5 to be used to plant a tree in Tinners Forest, a plantation near Roche in Cornwall.
The trees will naturally absorb carbon as they grow and they are a mix of broadleaf native trees, including English Oak, Ash, Silver, Birch and Alder.
The forest is owned and managed by co2balance to ensure that there is absolute control over its future. Once the woodland is completed and mature, it will be turned into a community woodland owned by a charitable trust, so the local area can benefit from carbon offsetting as well as the environment.
To plant a tree costs £10, so a couple both contributing £5 pay enough for a new tree to be planted. A tree captures around 900kg of co2 over its lifetime, - more than enough to compensate for the co2 used by a couple on a trip to Tregarthen’s.
We hope that you will take part in this new venture to help protect the environment.
When you settle your bill at Reception prior to departure, you will be asked if you would like to make this voluntary donation.
Guests who do so will be emailed a Certificate to document their donation towards this project.
