The Isles of Scilly is one of the world’s natural wonderlands and never fails to take your breath away with its unspoilt beauty and dramatic environment.
If you approach the islands by sea, you are sharing the experience of generations of seafarers and travellers, (including Alfred, Lord Tennyson who made the journey to Tregarthen’s by sea in 1863 and penned the famous poem ‘Enoch Arden’ there.)
Although nowadays, many people prefer to fly, there is a lot to be said for a more leisurely and classic experience, travelling by land and sea. This is a more environment-friendly way to travel too.
Our Classic Land and Sea Experience turns your journey into an adventure, just as it would have been in the past. Tregarthen’s Hotel was originally the home of Captain Frank Tregarthen, who sailed to the mainland to collect provisions and post for the islands in the 19th Century. He started bringing back people from the mainland to stay as paying guests– and that is how Tregarthen’s Hotel was born!
We have teamed up with First Great Western and Isles of Scilly Travel to offer you a great ‘Land and Sea Experience ’ including 3 nights dinner, bed and breakfast at Tregarthen’s Hotel from only £364 per person, including return train travel and return ferry crossings (which are purchased at a discount on your behalf). Extra nights are available from £90 per person.
Start your adventure on a First Great Western train, joining at any station between London Paddington and Penzance. The train journey to Cornwall is a classic, going past amazing scenery and over the Tamar estuary as you cross the Prince Albert Bridge. The excitement of train travel to Cornwall was captured by John Betjeman who as a child often travelled to his family’s Cornish holiday home by train from London.
Choose between travelling overnight on the sleeper train to Penzance, arriving with an hour to spare before catching the morning ferry or travel by day, arriving in time to explore Penzance. Why not travel in style – try First Class for extra space and comfort.
If you travel by day, you can spend the night in the historic town of Penzance before catching the ferry the following morning. (Accommodation in Penzance is not included and there is a supplement payable for the sleeper train and First Class).
Head for the quay (only a short stroll from the railway station) to take your place on the ferry, the Scillonian 111.
The voyage is one of the world’s classic ferry trips. Take in the spectacular South Cornish coastline as you cruise to the islands - quaint Cornish fishing coves, the world renowned open air Minack Theatre, and the Land's End peninsula slipping quietly by. If you are lucky you may see dolphins, rare birds, basking sharks or even a minke whale.
The awesome sight of the rocky islands looming out of the sea as you approach the archipelago is one you will never forget.
