With our stunning position on the Isles of Scilly, one of the world’s most unspoilt and unique natural environments, Tregarthen’s believes that we must do everything possible to reduce our impact on the environment, without compromising our guest’s enjoyment.
We recognise that as a large business on the island, the waste produced and the energy used are significant and we have objectives and targets in place to deal with this.
We have a Buy Local policy, whereby we source as much of our food locally as possible.
We have a scheme in place whereby waste food is recycled as compost and our waste vegetable oil is also recycled into fuel for the refuse collection vans on the Isles of Scilly. Our cans and glass bottles are also recycled through Scilly Waste.
Light bulbs throughout the hotel are in the process of being replaced with low-energy light bulbs.
We have installed new boilers for the 2008 season that are lower in carbon emissions. We also have a high efficiency saver installed for our washing machine in 2008, to avoid unnecessary waste of water and electricity.
We have an association with a carbon offset company and invite our guests to offset the carbon emissions associated with their travel to Scilly by paying a £5 voluntary fee that goes toward the planting of a tree.
We have a water butt, so we can recycle rainwater to water our plants.
We encourage our guests to help us minimise energy and water wastage and only ask us to wash towels when required.
Another area where we encourage guests and staff to get involved is in the beach clean-ups that are run fortnightly throughout the summer by the Isles of Scilly AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.)
All of our staff are fully aware of our sustainable ethos when they join the hotel and are encouraged to join out Green Team, who meet once a month to discuss new initiatives to introduce at the hotel.
We are working closely with Isles of Scilly Council to pilot new initiatives and do everything we can to help protect the fragile and beautiful environment of the Isles of Scilly.
